We are often discussing and posting articles from domestic sources on medical tourism, but haven’t really had the opportunity to share another country’s view—particularly one that is beginning to receive more and more tourists seeking health care. Korea, along with many other Asian countries, has an “arms wide open” approach to medical tourism. After all, lesser developed countries have raked in billions of dollars because of it. But is medical tourism everything it is chalked up to be?

Imagine constantly being followed and monitored in order to know where you go, how you get there and what you do when you finally arrive. This is a lot what is happening behind the scenes on the Internet with companies collecting consumers’ information for advertising purposes. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are drafting legislation that will allow consumers to know what information is being collected about them and shared with advertisers. Both Google and Microsoft are proponents of passing legislation for consumers’ Internet privacy.

Within the past few weeks, a worm has spread throughout corporate, educational and public computer networks around the world. It is known as Conficker or Downadup and is the worst infection since the Slammer worm in January of 2003. It is not yet known as to what the impact will be and many computer users might not even notice that they’re computer is infected. Researchers have suggested that part of the reason that the attack was so successful is because of the lack of updates installed on the part of companies and individuals.

It’s amazing to think that despite how costly travelling can be, medical tourism can actually save people 40 to 80 percent. Surely the cost of a surgery doesn’t compare to the cost of a vacation for someone without health insurance. But let’s not confuse the two either. The founder of Satori World Medical, Steven Lash, prefers the nomenclature “medical travel” because tourism makes it sound as though it’s a pleasant vacation. Regardless of what you call it, the practice of traveling abroad for medical care is becoming increasingly popular despite concerns regarding quality or malpractice.

By now you may have heard of former Republican Congressman, Tom Davis, as the front-runner for the Obama administration’s cyber security czar. What you may not know, however, is that he is “no friend of privacy” and the author of the national identification law known as REAL ID. Given Obama’s promises to protect privacy, Davis’s stance as the number one candidate is somewhat puzzling. Sure, he is known to be “tech-smart,” but he’s also been known to be on the opposing side of key privacy issues.

Is Internet privacy and security so out of our control that we need an entirely new Internet? If so, what would this “new Internet” even look like? One alternative is a “gated community” of sorts whereby the average user can no longer remain anonymous and safe. If this new Internet were to become widely popular, the previous (or current) one would be similar to a dark alley where you enter with caution and always look over your shoulder. Regardless of what happens, it’s become increasingly harder to ignore the vulnerability of the Internet. Click on the link below for some of the answers to what is becoming a very timely issue– “Do we need a new Internet?”

Opera, the Web browser, has recently announced some new features including Opera Unite which allows anyone run a Web server on their desktop.
