It is not often that you hear about medical records being stolen, but it happened to a mother of two after her car was broken into. The medical records were her children’s, both affected with Down’s syndrome, and spanning their entire lives medical histories. Luckily, a man found the briefcase containing the records on the street while walking his dog and turned it into the police.
It is situations like these, although rare, that make one wonder if the conversion from paper to electronic medical records will increase their safety. On the other hand, electronic records are not always entirely safe themselves.

True they are not always safe, but most commercially available PHR’s (like customized USB devices)generally have multiple levels of security available.
